How to Avoid Devastating Parent Traps by James J. Jones, Ph.D.
Introduction - Contd.
The Great Question:
Will Your Family Crash and Burn?
A lone man stands by a runway, shielding his eyes, as he peers into the bright
sky. High above him, barely visible to the naked eye, he tracks a small shiny object.
He was the chief designer and engineer for the aircraft soaring above him.
This man is totally familiar with the forces of nature that are now acting upon
that aircraft as it streaks through the sky at over three times the speed of sound.
Even he marvels at the miracle of such a sight.
Into his mind flash pictures he had seen of those early aircraft and the men who
had flown them. What progress we have made in just a few short years he thinks.
There had been many attempts to design airplanes and to fly them. Many pilots
died and many aircraft crashed and burned because in the early days of aviation the
principles of aerodynamics were only partially understood. The price of ignorance
had been very high.
Sadly, neither determination, hard work nor sincerity can make up for a lack of
understanding of correct principles. If there has been the slightest miscalculation in
the strength of the metal, the engine, the wing foil, the controls, or any one of a
thousand other possible factors in that aircraft, the forces of nature will be
absolutely unforgiving. If the error is significant enough, the aircraft will be
instantly torn apart in mid air. Ignorance and human error can be disastrous.
There are also correct principles involved in personal and family relationships.
These principles are just as certain as the laws of aerodynamics although they appear
more subtle and harder to define, much like the laws of aerodynamics were just a
few years ago. The principles governing happy and loving relationships between
family members are real and just as important as the laws of gravity or any other
physical law. If you do not clearly understand and practice the correct laws of
family government and human relationships, your family will crash and burn.
In summary: Airplanes don’t fly because the designers mean well or try hard. No amount of
good will or sincere resolve can make up for ignorance of the correct principles
involved. As it is with aircraft, so it is with every other issue of life, and especially
of families. Neither aircraft nor
families fly by haphazard management.
If they fly, it is only with intelligent
and sustained effort in applying the
principles that govern them. Today
we see many families that crash and
burn. You have a choice, learn the
correct principles and get smart or
take the chance that your family will
crash and burn.
